Murder of Woman While Trying to Prevent Rape

Bengaluru, Karnataka – A horrifying crime has come to light in Bengaluru, where a 34-year-old software engineer was brutally killed after resisting an attempted sexual assault, police reports reveal.

The victim, identified as Sharmila D.K., was attacked in her home on the night of 3 January. Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old youth, Karnel Kurai, in connection with her murder. Investigations indicate that Kurai attempted to enter Sharmila’s residence through a window with the intent of committing sexual assault. A struggle ensued when Sharmila resisted, during which Kurai reportedly pressed his hands over her mouth and nose, leading to fatal injuries.

In a bid to destroy evidence of the crime, the accused is alleged to have set fire to Sharmila’s bedding and clothing, and fled the scene taking her mobile phone. Initial reports suggested that the fire may have caused her death by asphyxiation. However, subsequent forensic analysis and detailed police investigations confirmed that the death was the result of a deliberate act of murder, not an accidental fire.

Police have now formally charged Kurai with murder and tampering with evidence. Authorities have also pledged to take stringent measures to prevent similar crimes and to ensure justice for victims. The case has sparked widespread concern over the safety of women in the city, highlighting ongoing issues of violence against women despite legal protections.
