Concerns had emerged over Lionel Messi’s availability due to a calf muscle injury, raising doubts about his participation in the remainder of the Leagues Cup for Inter Miami as well as Argentina’s upcoming home match. However, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano has offered some reassurance: Messi could be back on the pitch as early as tomorrow’s (Sunday) match.
On Sunday morning, Inter Miami will host Los Angeles Galaxy at DRV PNK Stadium in Major League Soccer (MLS). Mascherano confirmed that Messi, the Argentine superstar, is expected to make his first appearance in this fixture. Messi had sustained the injury in his right calf during a Leagues Cup match against Necaxa on 2 August, forcing him to leave the field after just 12 minutes. Since 13 August, he has been participating in full-team training.
Mascherano expressed optimism regarding Messi’s return: “Leo is now doing well. He has been training with the team since Wednesday. Unless something unusual occurs, he will be included in tomorrow’s squad.”
Despite some days out due to visa issues, Rodrigo De Paul is confirmed to be available for the Galaxy clash. Additionally, Inter Miami’s midfielder Federico Redondo recently joined Spanish club Elche in La Liga, and goalkeeper Drake Callender is on the verge of joining Charlotte FC.
Addressing the current squad depth, Mascherano stated: “The transfer window still has over a week left. Although our numbers may seem small, we are sufficiently balanced. We may need players in specific positions, but I am content with what I currently have.”
Inter Miami strengthened their squad by acquiring Argentine midfielder De Paul from Atlético Madrid during the recent transfer window, bolstering midfield options. The club is also exploring additions to their defensive and attacking lines. Reports from ESPN indicate that Inter Miami has been in contact with Gonzalo Piovi, a defender from Mexican side Cruz Azul. Mascherano, however, remained cautious: “As much as I know about Piovi, you also know. I don’t want to speak about players not in our squad. It would be disrespectful to our team, other clubs, and players.”
Argentina will face Venezuela at home on 5 September in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Four days later, the reigning world champions will meet Ecuador. Messi’s participation in these matches had been uncertain due to his injury, which also caused him to miss Inter Miami’s last two games against LAFC.
