Iran to Conduct Naval Exercises with China, Russia

Amid heightened tensions with the United States, Iran is preparing to conduct joint naval exercises with two of Washington’s long-standing rivals, China and Russia, in mid-February. The announcement underscores Tehran’s intent to assert its maritime capabilities while signalling its strategic alliances.

The Anadolu Agency reported on Saturday, citing Iranian media, that the upcoming exercise, named “Maritime Security Belt”, will see the participation of naval units from all three countries. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency added that both the regular Iranian Navy and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy will take part, alongside Chinese and Russian naval forces.

The exercises are scheduled to take place in the northern Indian Ocean, a strategic waterway that has witnessed increasing geopolitical manoeuvring in recent years. Iranian officials have stressed that the drills are defensive in nature, though the timing is significant, coming as tensions with Washington have escalated.

Tasnim News noted that the “Maritime Security Belt” exercises were initiated by the Iranian Navy in 2019. Since then, seven joint exercises have been conducted, each highlighting Tehran’s growing naval sophistication and international partnerships.

The drills follow heightened rhetoric from the United States. Former US President Donald Trump had previously warned of “a massive naval fleet” moving towards Iran and urged Tehran to engage in negotiations. Iranian officials responded firmly, warning that any American attack would be met with a rapid and devastating retaliation.

Tehran has reiterated that it is willing to enter dialogue only under conditions that are fair, balanced, and free from coercion, signalling its insistence on negotiation terms that reflect Iran’s strategic priorities.
