Just eight wickets stand between Sunil Narine and a historic milestone in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The West Indian all-rounder, representing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is poised to become the first overseas bowler to reach 200 IPL wickets this season—a remarkable feat that underscores his longevity and consistency.
A decade ago, the curly-haired ‘mystery spinner’ arrived from Guyana and donned KKR’s purple and gold jersey for the first time. Little did anyone know that he would become synonymous with the franchise, remaining loyal for 15 consecutive seasons—a rarity in an era where players frequently switch teams.
From the very beginning, Narine made an impact. In his debut season, he claimed 24 wickets, helping KKR lift their first IPL trophy. Over the years, captains have come and gone—Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan, Shreyas Iyer, and now Ajinkya Rahane—but Narine’s presence has remained steadfast. He has played 189 matches for KKR, a record no other player from the franchise has surpassed.
On the bowling front, Narine has already taken 192 wickets, the highest in KKR history. He has taken five wickets in an innings once, and four wickets on seven occasions. Yet his contributions are not limited to bowling; Narine’s batting has often troubled opposition bowlers. Across 122 innings, he has scored 1,780 runs, including one century and seven fifties. This season, with just eight wickets away, he is on the cusp of an unprecedented record for an overseas bowler in the IPL.
| Category | Total | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Matches (KKR) | 189 | Most by any KKR player |
| Wickets | 192 | 5 wickets in an innings once, 4 wickets seven times |
| Innings Batted | 122 | 1,780 runs, 1 century, 7 fifties |
| Milestone Target | 200 wickets | First overseas bowler to achieve |
In IPL history, only India’s Yuzvendra Chahal (221 wickets) has surpassed the 200-wicket mark, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar is very close with 198. No overseas bowler has yet reached this landmark—making Narine’s pursuit all the more historic.
Previously, Dwayne Bravo held the record for most wickets by an overseas player with 183, but he will be involved with KKR this season in a mentoring capacity rather than as a player.
KKR will kick off their 2026 IPL campaign on 29 March against Mumbai Indians, followed by fixtures against Sunrisers Hyderabad (2 April), Punjab Kings (6 April), and Lucknow Super Giants (9 April). Fans will be eagerly watching, anticipating the moment when Narine secures his place in IPL history.
Narine’s journey is a testament to consistency, loyalty, and skill—qualities that have defined both him and KKR over the last fifteen seasons.
