Strategically vital in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz witnessed a series of attacks on three separate cargo vessels on Wednesday, 11 March. Each ship sustained damage from unidentified objects, with one vessel experiencing a fire that prompted an emergency evacuation. The incidents have been confirmed by the French news agency AFP and the UK-based maritime security organisation UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations).
According to maritime security sources, the first ship targeted was the Thai-flagged bulk carrier “Mayuri Nari”, which was struck approximately 11 nautical miles north of Oman’s coastline. The attack ignited a fire in the ship’s engine room, necessitating the temporary evacuation of most of its crew. Subsequent reports from UKMTO indicate that the fire has since been brought under control, no major environmental disaster has occurred, and a minimal number of crew members remain on board to manage essential operations.
The second attack involved the Japanese-flagged container ship “One Majesty”, which came under assault around 25 nautical miles northwest of Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. Although the vessel suffered minor damage, all crew members remain safe, and the ship is currently making its way to a secure anchorage.
The third vessel, the Marshall Islands-flagged “Star Guineeth”, was hit roughly 50 miles northwest of Dubai. Maritime risk management firm Vanguard reported that while the ship incurred damage, the entire crew remained unharmed.
These attacks have heightened regional concerns, particularly given that the Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint through which nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas supplies are transported. Since hostilities began on 28 February, the region has seen at least 14 separate attacks on shipping vessels, significantly reducing normal maritime traffic along this crucial route.
| Vessel Name | Flag | Location of Attack | Damage Level | Crew Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mayuri Nari | Thailand | 11 nautical miles north of Oman | Engine room fire | Most evacuated; some remain |
| One Majesty | Japan | 25 nautical miles NW of Ras Al Khaimah | Minor | All safe |
| Star Guineeth | Marshall Islands | 50 miles NW of Dubai | Damaged | All safe |
Maritime analysts warn that continued unrest in the Strait could further disrupt global energy markets and exacerbate tensions in an already volatile region. Shipping companies are advised to exercise heightened vigilance while transiting the area.
