The Police Headquarters has clarified that the information circulating on social media claiming that Sumaiya Jafrin, the wife of Major Sadik who is currently in military custody over allegations of training Awami League activists, is a police officer is not true.

This statement was released by the Police Headquarters on Saturday, 2 August.

Official Statement Summary

Purpose of Clarification To dispel public confusion and misinformation

The police statement noted that recently, on social media and various online platforms, a woman named ‘Sumaiya Jafrin’ was referred to as an ASP of the Bangladesh Police. The Police Headquarters drew attention to this and clarified that no such officer is currently serving under that name.

Background of the Incident

On 31 July, during a press briefing held at the Officers’ Mess of Dhaka Cantonment, Brigadier General Md. Nazim-ud-Doula, Director of the Military Operations Directorate of the Army Headquarters, revealed that information had emerged on social media and various media outlets claiming that an army officer named Major Sadik was training Awami League activists.

Following this, the military took Major Sadik into custody and began interrogating him.

Brigadier General Nazim-ud-Doula stated:
“The matter concerning Major Sadik has come to our attention. Although the investigation is ongoing, I must say that after learning of such an incident, he is currently in military custody, and the investigation continues. If found guilty through the investigation, action will undoubtedly be taken against him according to the established rules of the Army.”

Misinformation About Sumaiya Jafrin

Soon after, social media began to circulate claims that Major Sadik’s wife, Sumaiya Jafrin, was employed as an ASP in the police force. There were also assertions that she was working as an associate of Major Sadik.

The Police Headquarters has explicitly denied these claims, stating that no police officer by that name is part of the force.

This clarification aims to curb the spread of misinformation and maintain public trust in official institutions amid ongoing investigations.
