Passenger Bus Overturns in Comilla, Several Injured

A passenger bus overturned in Comilla on Wednesday night after the driver reportedly lost control, raising fears of multiple casualties. The incident involved a vehicle operated by the Ekushay Paribahan transport company.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:20 pm on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway, in the Kabila area of Burichang Upazila, a well-known stretch prone to traffic congestion and road accidents. Eyewitnesses reported that the bus, carrying a number of passengers returning home, suddenly swerved before tipping over onto its side.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge A. Momin of the Maynamati Highway Police Station told Dhaka Post: “The Ekushay Paribahan bus lost control on the highway and overturned. Police and fire service personnel are en route to the site to provide assistance. Further details will be shared once the situation is under control.”

Emergency response teams, including both police and fire service units, were dispatched immediately to the scene to rescue trapped passengers and provide first aid. Local residents also rushed to help, assisting in evacuating injured passengers to nearby hospitals.

Highway authorities have warned commuters to exercise caution, particularly on busy intercity routes, noting that accidents caused by overspeeding, vehicle malfunction, or driver fatigue remain a persistent risk on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway.

Officials also emphasised the need for stricter safety measures, including regular vehicle inspections and driver training, especially for buses operating during peak travel times such as the Eid holiday period, when passenger loads surge significantly.

Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances that led to the bus overturning, including whether road conditions, mechanical failure, or driver error were contributing factors. A detailed report is expected once rescue operations are completed and passenger accounts are collected.
