Authorities in Maheshpur Upazila, Jhenaidah, have apprehended two suspects in connection with the harrowing abduction and gang rape of a local schoolgirl. The arrests were made during the early hours of Wednesday, 1 April, following a coordinated police operation in the Bagdiar and Samanta areas.
The horrific ordeal reportedly occurred on the evening of 26 March, a day otherwise marked by national celebrations. According to local sources and police statements, the victim—a young school student—was returning to her own residence after visiting a neighbour’s house. As she traversed the road through Samanta Bagdiar village, she was intercepted and forcibly abducted by two young men.
The victim was taken to a secluded location where two additional accomplices joined the initial pair. The assailants allegedly bound the girl’s hands and muffled her cries before subjecting her to a brutal, repeated sexual assault. Adding a layer of digital extortion to the physical violence, one of the perpetrators recorded the incident on a mobile device. The suspects then threatened the victim, stating that they would circulate the footage on social media platforms should she dare to report the crime to the authorities or her family.
Following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s paternal aunt, the Maheshpur police initiated a swift manhunt. The First Information Report (FIR) named four individuals, leading to the successful capture of two suspects during the Wednesday morning raids.
Details of the Apprehended Suspects:
| Suspect Name | Age | Father’s Name | Residential Address |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hazrat Ali | 18 | Hafizur Rahman | Bagdiar Village, Maheshpur |
| Aser Ali (alias Raju) | 19 | Anwar Hossain | Samanta Charatala Para, Maheshpur |
Mehedi Hasan, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maheshpur Police Station, confirmed the arrests and stated that the police are conducting further raids to bring the remaining two fugitives to justice. “We have taken this matter with the utmost seriousness,” the OC remarked. “The victim is receiving medical attention and support, and the arrested individuals will be produced before the court to face the full weight of the law.”
The incident has sparked widespread indignation across the Jhenaidah district. Local human rights advocates and residents have expressed deep concern over the rising trend of technology-aided sexual violence and extortion. Community leaders have called for a fast-track trial to ensure that the perpetrators receive an exemplary punishment, serving as a deterrent against such depraved acts of violence.
The police have also warned the public against sharing any sensitive digital content related to the case, noting that the recovery of the recorded video is a priority for the ongoing investigation to prevent further victimisation of the young girl.
