Police Constable Seriously Injured in Robbery Attack

A police constable in Gazipur’s Tongi area was critically injured in a stabbing incident carried out by suspected robbers late on Tuesday night. The assault occurred at approximately 11:00 pm near Nipun Garments, adjacent to Hossain Market, on the footpath of the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway.

The victim, Constable Md. Sahmul Haque Shanto, aged 23, is a 2020 batch officer currently assigned to the Public Order Management (POM) unit under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). His permanent residence is in Tarakandi, Muktagacha, Mymensingh district.

According to police sources and eyewitness accounts, Constable Shanto was walking along the footpath for personal reasons when two to three suspected robbers launched a sudden attack. During a scuffle, one of the assailants stabbed him deeply in the neck with a sharp weapon, causing him to collapse onto the pavement in a pool of blood.

Local residents, alerted by Shanto’s cries for help, rushed to the scene. The attackers attempted to flee, but a 26-year-old suspect identified as Roni was caught by the crowd and subjected to a brief public assault before police intervened and took him into custody. Efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are ongoing.

With the assistance of bystanders, the injured constable was swiftly transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. After initial treatment in the emergency department, he was admitted to Ward 4. Medical officials reported that the wound to his neck was deep and that he remains under close observation.

Tongi West Police responded promptly to the incident, securing the area and taking the detained suspect for medical attention before arranging advanced care at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Khan confirmed that the arrested individual has been identified and detained. He stated, “The suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the law, and no leniency will be shown. Legal action is underway, and operations continue to locate the remaining suspects.”
