Dhaka, 5 February 2026 – Police have recovered a substantial cache of 152 cricket stamps from a polling station in the historic Katherpool area of Old Dhaka.
The discovery was confirmed on Thursday by Mohaiminul Islam, Inspector (Investigation) of Sutrapur Police Station. According to the officer, authorities acted on intelligence suggesting that weapons were being stored at the site.
“Acting on the tip-off, a magistrate accompanied our team to the polling station around 1:00 am yesterday,” Inspector Islam stated. “At that time, local leaders and supporters of the BNP had reportedly surrounded the premises.”
During the search, police seized 152 cricket stamps and subsequently transported them to the station for further investigation.
When questioned about the ownership of the stamps or the intent behind their collection, Inspector Islam declined to provide specific details. He added that it remains unclear whether there was any political motive associated with the items.
This incident comes amid heightened vigilance in the capital ahead of the upcoming elections, with authorities maintaining strict monitoring of polling stations to prevent illegal activities and the misuse of election materials. Although no explosives or firearms were reportedly found, the seizure of these stamps has raised questions about potential attempts to manipulate voting or ballot processes.
For clarity, the details of the recovered items are summarised below:
| Item Recovered | Quantity | Location | Date of Recovery | Additional Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cricket stamps | 152 | Katherpool polling station, Old Dhaka | 4 February 2026 | Circumstances of collection unclear; political motive unconfirmed |
Inspector Islam confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine the source of the stamps and whether they were intended for illegal electoral purposes. Local election authorities have been notified, and police continue to maintain a presence in the area to ensure the security and integrity of the electoral process.
The discovery highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in ensuring fair and transparent elections, particularly in areas with a history of political tension. Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
