In Basantpur village near the Comilla border, a mother and her younger son were killed in a stabbing by their elder brother over a dispute regarding drug dealing and land. The incident occurred on Monday (17 November) morning.
The deceased are Rahela Begum (65), wife of the late Azgar Ali of Basantpur village, and her younger son Kamal Hossain (35). After the incident, the elder brother, Billal Hossain, remains on the run. Police have detained his wife, Akleema Khatun, for questioning.
Police said that Billal has long been involved in drug dealing and has a case against him under the Narcotics Act. In the morning, when Billal tried to bring drugs into the house, his younger brother Kamal stopped him. This led to an argument between the two brothers. At one point, Billal took a knife from the house and stabbed Kamal repeatedly. When their mother Rahela Begum tried to stop him, she was also attacked with the same knife. Kamal died at the scene, and Rahela Begum died on the way to the hospital.
Md. Mohinul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said that attempts are ongoing to arrest Billal. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem.
He also mentioned that besides the dispute over drugs, there had been a long-standing conflict in the family over land.
