The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is preparing to take decisive action against Dhaka Capitals after the franchise failed to clear outstanding payments owed to players from the most recent Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season.

According to BPL Governing Council member secretary Iftekhar Rahman Mithu, the franchise still owes more than BDT 3 crore to cricketers, despite repeated reminders and official correspondence. The issue has triggered growing frustration among players, several of whom have publicly raised concerns over delayed remuneration.

Mithu confirmed that while other franchises have largely settled their obligations in line with contractual terms, Dhaka Capitals remain the only side yet to fully comply. He emphasised that the BCB’s priority is to safeguard player payments rather than rely solely on assurances from franchise management.

Standard payment structure ignored

Under BPL regulations, franchise payments are structured in three instalments:
25 per cent before the tournament, 50 per cent during the competition, and the remaining 25 per cent within 45 days of completion. Officials stated that while most franchises followed this schedule, Dhaka Capitals have repeatedly failed to meet deadlines.

Payment dues overview

CategoryAmount/Status
Total estimated player duesOver BDT 4 crore
Amount already paidAround BDT 50–60 lakh (partial payments to some players)
Outstanding balanceMore than BDT 3 crore
Bank guarantee held by BCBBDT 5 crore
Cheque security heldBDT 5 crore
Compliance deadlineExceeded 60 days

Mithu revealed that the BCB had issued multiple formal notices, including a final 15-day ultimatum sent on 27 February, requesting full disclosure and settlement of player payments. While Dhaka Capitals initially assured that dues would be cleared before Eid, the commitment was not fulfilled.

BCB considers alternative enforcement measures

The Governing Council has now warned that alternative enforcement mechanisms will be activated if the franchise fails to settle payments immediately. These include utilising bank guarantees and cheques submitted as financial security.

Mithu stressed that the board is not concerned about the validity of the guarantees, which remain valid until mid-May and beyond in different tranches. However, he noted that administrative patience has reached its limit given that more than 60 days have already passed beyond the required payment window.

“We have reached a stage where further delay is no longer acceptable,” he indicated, adding that a final decision is expected within the week.

Players’ concerns and delayed reporting

Officials also revealed that the extent of the issue only became fully apparent after players directly submitted their outstanding payment records. It was later confirmed that approximately 75 per cent of total dues had remained unpaid at one stage, amounting to nearly BDT 4 crore.

Although partial payments of around BDT 50–60 lakh were made earlier, they were deemed insufficient to resolve the broader liabilities.

Final decision imminent

The BCB Governing Council is expected to meet early next week to determine the next course of action. Sources suggest that stronger administrative measures are now likely if Dhaka Capitals fail to respond within the newly set informal deadline.

While officials reiterated that player payments will be fully protected under existing financial securities, they also made clear that franchise compliance is essential for maintaining the credibility and financial discipline of the Bangladesh Premier League.
