A dispute over music played at a wedding ceremony has escalated into allegations of violence inside a mosque in Chapainawabganj’s Gomostapur upazila, prompting police to investigate the incident.

The confrontation reportedly took place in Makrampur village under Alinagar union, inside the Baitus Salam Jame Mosque shortly after Friday prayers. According to police, a written complaint has been received regarding the incident, which is alleged to have stemmed from objections to loud music played during a wedding celebration days earlier.

Gomostapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Barik confirmed that the complaint was filed on Saturday afternoon by the father of the bride, Abul Kalam Azad. He stated that the matter is currently under review, while efforts at local mediation are also reportedly underway.

Background of the dispute

According to Abul Kalam Azad, the incident originated on 23 March during a wedding ceremony held at his father-in-law’s residence, located adjacent to the mosque. Music was being played using a sound system as part of the celebrations.

He claimed that local community leader Shariful Islam intervened at the time, instructing attendees to stop the music on the grounds that loud sound systems are socially discouraged in the village. The music was subsequently halted, and an apology was offered by the family, which they believed had resolved the matter.

However, Azad alleged that tensions resurfaced during Friday prayers, when the same local figure allegedly incited others after the congregation ended. He claimed that a group of individuals then entered the mosque premises and physically attacked members of the wedding party.

Allegations of assault

Abul Kalam Azad stated that he and several relatives, including Muslim, Ahad, Sharif, Durul, and Asgar, were assaulted during the incident. He further claimed that his father-in-law, Ashikul Islam, managed to escape the scene, but later the family left their home due to fears for their safety.

His wife’s aunt, Tania Akter, also alleged that members of the family are now living in fear. She claimed that threats have been issued warning that they would be attacked wherever they are found, forcing several family members to remain indoors or relocate temporarily.

Allegations and counter-claims

The accused village leader, Shariful Islam, has rejected the allegations of physical assault. He insisted that no violence took place and described the incident as a verbal dispute only. He added that the village has maintained an informal ban on loud sound systems during the past two years as part of local social agreements.

He further claimed that the disagreement arose solely due to the use of loud music during the wedding event, and not from any organised attack or physical confrontation.

Police statement and current status

Officer-in-Charge Abdul Barik stated that the complaint alleges an assault inside the mosque following Friday prayers linked to the earlier dispute over music at the wedding. He added that although a written complaint has been filed, the complainant has also indicated that local elders are attempting to mediate the matter informally.

According to police, the complainant has suggested that he may provide further instructions after community-based reconciliation efforts conclude. Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests, and the situation remains under observation.

Rising tensions in the village

The incident has created tension in the local area, with differing accounts from both sides contributing to uncertainty over what exactly transpired. While one side alleges a coordinated attack inside a place of worship, the other maintains that the matter was limited to a disagreement over community norms regarding loud music.

Police have said they are monitoring the situation closely to prevent any further escalation, as efforts continue to resolve the dispute through both legal and local mediation channels.
