After nearly 18 months of inactivity, the district office of the Bangladesh Awami League in Rajbari has resumed visible operations, sparking renewed political discussion across the town. The development follows the sudden hoisting of the জাতীয় পতাকা (National Flag) and the display of an inauguration banner at the party’s প্রধান সড়ক (main road) office on Tuesday morning, 17 February.
The event, which appeared to have been conducted without prior public notice, drew immediate attention from local residents, traders, and passers-by. According to eyewitness Ismail Hossain, a van driver who was loading goods from a truck nearby at approximately 10:00 a.m., two youths aged around 17 or 18 arrived at the premises, raised the flag, and mounted an inauguration banner before leaving the area promptly. Their swift departure and the absence of any formal gathering or senior party figures lent an air of ambiguity to the occasion.
A site inspection revealed that the banner bore the name of Nuruzzaman Mia Sohel, General Secretary of the district unit of Jubo League, the youth wing traditionally affiliated with the ruling party. The banner stated that, in line with central directives, organisational activities were being carried out and that the office had been formally “inaugurated”. However, it contained no information regarding a specific programme schedule, leadership presence, or upcoming events.
Local residents assert that no overt organisational activity had been visible at the office since 5 August last year. For much of that period, the premises appeared dormant. The sudden symbolic reactivation has therefore generated speculation within local political circles. Some observers interpret the move as a formal recommencement of party operations, while others view it as a limited signal of renewed engagement rather than a full-scale reopening.
Law enforcement agencies have confirmed that they are monitoring the situation. Additional Superintendent of Police Tapas Kumar Pal stated that officers from the থানার পুলিশ (local police station) and intelligence units visited the scene after being informed of the flag-hoisting. He added that the matter is under review and that appropriate measures will be taken if required.
