Barely a fortnight after their dramatic encounter in the league, Real Madrid and Benfica are set to clash once more in the UEFA Champions League play-off stage. The draw, conducted on Friday (30 January) in Nyon, Switzerland, confirmed that the two clubs will meet in a two-legged tie to determine who progresses to the round of 16.

In added time, Benfica scored the decisive goal they needed to secure 24th place and guarantee a play-off berth. Real, who required just one goal to finish in the top eight and avoid the play-off, were instead relegated to ninth, setting up this unexpected rematch.

The draw also produced another compelling tie: Monaco versus Paris Saint-Germain. Both French sides, familiar rivals in Ligue 1, will meet again on a European stage, adding extra intrigue to the play-off round.
The first leg of the play-offs is scheduled for 17–18 February, with the return legs taking place a week later on 24–25 February.
