Nelson Mandela, the epic hero of the anti-apartheid struggle and an eternal beacon of humanity, was born on 18 July 1918 into a distinguished family in Mvezo, South Africa. Today, the world commemorates Mandela Day in his honour, celebrating human freedom, democracy, and equality.
He was South Africa’s first democratically elected president (1994–1999). After pursuing higher education in law, Mandela began his career as a lawyer in Johannesburg, where he actively campaigned against colonial rule, championed African nationalism, and sought justice for the oppressed.
In 1943, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and in 1944 founded the ANC Youth League, becoming a central figure in mobilising the youth for political action. He also led the armed resistance through the Umkhonto we Sizwe organisation against the apartheid regime.
On 5 December 1956, Mandela and 150 other activists were arrested on charges of treason by the apartheid government. After a five-year trial, all were acquitted.
Mandela was arrested again in 1962 and sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage and other charges. While he was detained on Robben Island for 27 years, his spirit and belief in freedom remained unbroken.
He was released on 11 February 1990, returning to lead his nation with renewed determination, guiding South Africa toward peace and dialogue. His leadership helped end apartheid and establish a multiracial democracy in 1994.
On 5 December 2013, the world lost a great soul. Nelson Mandela remains a symbol of the light of freedom, the inspiration for resistance, and the eternal embodiment of human love for humanity.
Tribute to Nelson Mandela. Your name will forever be inscribed in the annals of human history.
