Rumin Farhana, BNP’s International Affairs Joint Secretary and former parliamentarian, has announced her intention to contest the upcoming election from Sirail-Ashuganj, provided she receives the support of local constituents. Speaking on Friday, 20 December, at a prayer and dialogue session for the recovery of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Bitghar Bazar, Panishwar Union, Sirail, Farhana emphasised her commitment to honouring the wishes of her community.
“I do what I say. The final decision rests with the people of my constituency. If you stand with me, I will contest the election from Sirail-Ashuganj, regardless of the party’s decision,” she declared.
Addressing the audience, Farhana outlined her vision for Sirail and Ashuganj, noting her desire to transform the two upazilas into model constituencies. She stressed that if elected, she would work to turn these aspirations into tangible development outcomes.
She also highlighted a growing local concern: while many constituencies across the country are already celebrating candidate nominations, Sirail-Ashuganj residents remain uncertain about their MP candidate, which she described as “regrettable” for the community. Reflecting on her own political journey, Farhana stated that her 17 years of public service are well known to the people, and that her political engagement is motivated by fulfilling her late father’s unfulfilled dreams.
Commenting on the forthcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election in February, Farhana noted:
“For the past 15 years, the people of Bangladesh have not been able to exercise their vote freely. The government now claims it will conduct the best election in 2026, and we hope that claim will hold true.”
She urged the authorities to confiscate all illegal weapons before the election, ensure that arms looted from police stations since 5 August are brought under the law, and guarantee the safety of voters, candidates, and campaign workers.
Currently, the BNP has announced candidates for 272 constituencies in two phases, but Brahmanbaria-2 (covering Sirail and Ashuganj) has yet to see an official nominee. Farhana has, meanwhile, been actively conducting grassroots outreach and social initiatives in the constituency over recent months.
