Salary Arrears Force Cuba Mitchell to Leave Kings

Bangladeshi footballer Cuba Mitchell has officially announced his departure from Bashundhara Kings, bringing an abrupt end to a move that once generated considerable surprise and optimism within the country’s football community. The decision comes less than a full season after his arrival, with prolonged unpaid wages cited as the principal reason behind the termination of his contract.

Mitchell had featured for Sunderland’s youth side in the previous season, and his direct transition from English football to Bangladesh’s most successful domestic club raised eyebrows across the region. Many viewed the move as a bold step that could elevate both the player’s career and the overall standard of the Bangladesh Premier League. However, the partnership failed to develop as anticipated.

In a statement published on Facebook, Mitchell confirmed that the failure to receive his outstanding salary over an extended period left him with little alternative but to walk away.

“Today, I have made the decision to end my contract with Kings due to the continued non-payment of my wages. This has been the primary factor behind my decision,”
he wrote.

Beyond the financial aspect, Mitchell revealed that several unresolved issues within the club contributed to an environment that became increasingly difficult to endure. He explained that continuing to train and compete under such circumstances proved both mentally and physically exhausting, ultimately affecting his wellbeing as a professional athlete.

In his farewell message, Mitchell also reflected more broadly on the state of Bangladeshi football, offering a candid yet hopeful assessment. He expressed the belief that the country’s footballing ecosystem has the potential to achieve far more, provided that players are supported by stronger structures, greater transparency, and fair treatment. According to Mitchell, without such foundations, it becomes challenging to sustain professionalism or retain emerging talent.

Despite the disappointing end to his spell at Kings, Mitchell was careful to acknowledge the positives of his time in Bangladesh. He noted that, although brief, the experience was meaningful. Immersing himself in local culture, adapting to the lifestyle, and forming bonds with teammates and supporters left a lasting impression.

“I met some incredible teammates and supporters who welcomed me warmly. They reminded me why I fell in love with this game in the first place,”
he said.

Mitchell emphasised that throughout his tenure, he maintained professionalism and treated the club’s badge with respect. He also used the moment to urge fellow footballers to stand up for one another, stressing that no player should suffer in silence due to unpaid wages or broken promises.

He concluded by stating that he harbours no bitterness and is determined to move forward positively, viewing this chapter as a learning experience rather than a setback.
