Renowned Bollywood composer Salim Merchant has long been celebrated for his musical genius, creating hit songs such as “Sukr Allah,” “Mawla Mere,” and “Saiyaan.” Yet, in recent days, his personal spiritual practices have drawn attention and sparked discussion among fans and the media alike.
In an interview, Merchant revealed that he observes Friday prayers (Jummah) in accordance with Islamic tradition, while also performing rituals devoted to Lord Shiva on Mondays. This revelation has prompted curiosity and debate about his dual devotion and the reasons behind it.
“I offer my respects to both faiths,” Merchant explained. “After Jummah on Fridays, I perform Shiva puja on Mondays. Many people question this, but I hold equal reverence for both religions. My connection with the Divine and with music is so profound that words alone cannot fully capture it.”
Merchant’s songs frequently reflect his Muslim heritage, often invoking the name of Allah. Yet, he also celebrates Hindu festivals through his art. Every year during Shivaratri, he composes and releases a song dedicated to the occasion, blending devotion with creativity in a way few artists attempt.
His approach to faith has not been without controversy. Last year, following the Palghat incident, Merchant publicly expressed anger and dismay, declaring that he sometimes felt “ashamed to be a Muslim” due to societal injustices. He has also strongly opposed remarks suggesting that he received fewer opportunities in his career because of his Muslim identity—a comment reportedly made by fellow musician A.R. Rahman.
Through all this, Merchant emphasises that his spiritual and musical journey is one of unity rather than division. His ability to harmonise multiple religious influences in both life and art exemplifies a rare and deeply personal commitment to inclusivity.
