Sanju Samson’s move from the Rajasthan Royals to the Chennai Super Kings has brought a major change to his role. Despite his vast leadership experience, the 31-year-old wicketkeeper-batter will not captain his new franchise in the upcoming IPL season. Chennai confirmed through an official message on social media that Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue as captain for the next campaign.
During the IPL trading window, the franchise released two prominent all-rounders—Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran—and brought Samson into the squad. This immediately sparked speculation that the experienced cricketer might also be handed the captaincy.
However, Chennai’s statement read, “Lead the charge, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad”, firmly shutting down all rumours. Samson is expected to feature primarily as a top-order batter, rather than as the team’s leader—despite having captained Rajasthan for several seasons with notable success.
Chennai last lifted the IPL trophy in 2023. The following season, after MS Dhoni stepped aside, Ruturaj Gaikwad was appointed captain. But the team’s performance suffered: they finished fifth in 2024 and ended at the bottom of the table in 2025. Gaikwad also missed several matches due to injury last season, during which Dhoni temporarily returned to lead the side.
Ahead of the mini-auction, Chennai have made significant squad changes. They have released key players including Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra and Matheesha Pathirana. The franchise now heads into the auction with a purse of ₹43.40 crore, with the capacity to sign up to eight players, including four overseas recruits.
The IPL mini-auction will be held on 16 December at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
