Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has described the verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka as biased and politically motivated.
In a five-page statement issued after the verdict, she stated that one of the interim government’s strategies to weaken the Awami League as a political force is to impose a death sentence on her.
She had earlier termed the judicial process a farce and denied all charges brought against her.
In her words, she does not fear facing the accusers in a tribunal where allegations are examined and verified fairly.
She further said that she has challenged the interim government to take these allegations to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Hasina claimed that she is extremely proud of her record on human rights and development.
Earlier, in the case concerning crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death.
In addition, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who confessed and became a state witness and testified against the former Prime Minister and former Home Minister, has been sentenced to five years in prison.
On Monday (17 November), the verdict was delivered by the three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1 headed by Justice Golam Martuza Mojumdar.
