The International League T20 (ILT20) delivered its biggest headline yet when Bangladeshi superstar Shakib Al Hasan was retired out for the first time in his long, illustrious career. The incident, which took place during MI Emirates’ clash against the Sharjah Warriors in Sharjah, has ignited major debate across cricketing circles.
Shakib entered the match boasting an extraordinary record: 879 professional games across formats and 913 innings with the bat. Yet not once in those performances had he experienced a tactical retirement. That changed dramatically in Sharjah.
Batting first, MI Emirates lost Muhammad Wasim at the end of the 10th over. Shakib walked in as the fifth batsman and began positively, producing 16 runs from 12 balls. As the match reached its final stretch, Shakib faced the last delivery of the 16th over — and then, to everyone’s shock, headed back to the pavilion.
Kieron Pollard replaced him, prompting a wave of speculation. It was only when commentator Mike Haysman relayed information from the MI Emirates camp that the picture became clear: Shakib had been withdrawn as part of a tactical strategy to inject more power-hitting into the final overs.
The decision placed Shakib alongside Sanzamul Islam as the only Bangladeshi players ever tactically retired out in recognised T20 cricket. Fans immediately took to social media, debating whether the call was smart innovation or unnecessary experimentation.
At that moment, the team stood at 129 for 4. Pollard, however, could not make the desired impact and was removed after scoring just four from two balls. Still, MI Emirates added a valuable 56 runs in the final four overs to reach 185 for 8.
Sharjah Warriors mounted a strong challenge, led by Sikandar Raza’s outstanding 64 off 33 balls. Despite his brilliance, MI Emirates remained composed, eventually clinching victory by four runs.
Shakib’s bowling, on the other hand, did not offer much promise on his debut. His two overs leaked 27 runs, showing signs of rust or adaptation issues.
While the match provided plenty of entertainment, Shakib’s tactical retirement was undoubtedly the defining moment. It showcased the increasingly bold strategic decisions teams are willing to take in franchise T20 cricket — decisions that may change how future matches are approached.
For Shakib, who has done almost everything possible in the sport, this surprising first will be remembered as one of the most unusual milestones of his career.
