Narayanganj Police Officer Found Dead in Rented Flat

A police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was found dead inside his rented apartment in Fatullah, Narayanganj, on Tuesday night, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased, identified as Abu Hanif, was serving with the Narayanganj District Police Lines. He was originally from Ichhapur village in Kalihati upazila of Tangail district. Police recovered his body from a fifth-floor flat in a six-storey residential building owned by Kamal Haji, located near the Isdair Temple area of Fatullah, at around 9:00 pm on 28 July.

According to police officials, Abu Hanif had been staying in the rented flat with his speech-impaired wife. At the time of the incident, he was on a five-day leave from duty due to illness.

Investigators said the officer had locked himself inside one of the rooms before allegedly hanging himself from a ceiling fan. After receiving information about the situation, police officers arrived at the scene and forced open the locked door, where they discovered his body.

The body was later sent to the morgue at Narayanganj General Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Mizaur Rahman Munshi visited the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Senior police officials inspected the apartment as part of the preliminary investigation.

Mahbub Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Fatullah Model Police Station, said the deceased had been suffering from health problems and was officially on leave at the time of his death. He confirmed that the body had been recovered following the forced entry into the flat and subsequently transferred to the hospital morgue for forensic examination.

Police have not disclosed any evidence suggesting foul play at this stage. Investigators are awaiting the findings of the post-mortem examination and are collecting relevant information to establish the circumstances that led to the officer’s death.

As is standard procedure in cases of unnatural death, police have launched an investigation and are examining all available evidence, including statements from family members and others connected to the incident. Officials said the inquiry remains ongoing, and the precise cause behind the death will only be confirmed after the completion of the investigation and the forensic report.

The death of a serving police officer has drawn attention within the local law enforcement community. However, authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation until the investigation is completed, stressing that all aspects of the case are being examined in accordance with legal procedures.
