Massive Police Drive Across Bangladesh Results in 140,000 Arrests

In an uncompromising push to curb rising crime rates and dismantle illegal syndicate networks, law enforcement authorities in Bangladesh have arrested 141,989 individuals during an intensive 88-day nationwide drive. Details released on Tuesday by the Police Headquarters media wing outline an expansive operation focused on confiscating illegal weaponry, suppressing narcotics distribution, and detaining wanted criminal suspects across all administrative districts.

Execution of Special and Routine Operations

The sustained police campaign ran from 1 May to 27 July, operating simultaneously across urban metropolitan zones and rural communities. According to official figures, the police executed a dual-track strategy combining targeted special operations with routine law enforcement procedures.

Of the total detentions, 39,267 individuals were apprehended during specialized, intelligence-led raids aimed at high-value targets and organized gangs. A further 102,722 individuals were taken into custody through standard police patrols, warrant executions, and ongoing criminal proceedings. Senior officials highlighted that this comprehensive effort was designed to restore public reassurance, mitigate violent crime, and maintain order ahead of critical administrative assessments.

Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives Neutralised

A fundamental objective of the nearly three-month initiative was the total recovery of unauthorized firearms and explosive materials in circulation. Police units succeeded in seizing 325 illegal firearms, alongside 2,802 live rounds of ammunition and cartridges, 103 firearm magazines, and 638 indigenous sharp weapons.

Law enforcement personnel also targeted illicit manufacturing operations, recovering 18 firearm components alongside 17 specialized tools used to assemble improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and firearms. Additionally, officers seized 46 crude cocktails, 2.25 kilograms of gunpowder, and 10,300 explosive firecrackers (“chocolate bombs”).

Severe Blow to Illegal Narcotics Networks

The press statement further detailed a sweeping crackdown on drug smuggling and localized distribution. Narcotics trafficking—particularly involving synthetic substances smuggled across land borders—remains a persistent law enforcement priority due to its severe social impact on young demographics.

During the course of the drive, officers intercepted over 9.1 million Yaba pills (a potent combination of methamphetamine and caffeine), alongside thousands of individual doses of heroin, cannabis, and contraband pharmaceutical syrups. Consequently, 17,066 official cases were registered under the Narcotics Control Act, resulting in the direct arrest of 24,821 suspects linked to drug offences. Police Headquarters reaffirmed that coordinated operations will continue unabated to ensure lasting public safety across Bangladesh.
