In Jhalokathi’s Nalchiti Upazila, a detained leader of the student wing of a political party was temporarily released on parole to attend his father’s funeral, participating while still wearing a leg chain. The individual, Rakibul Islam Jomadder (25), serves as the Organising Secretary of the Subidpur Union unit of the Student League.

The funeral of Rakibul’s father, Mosharraf Jomadder, was held on Thursday evening in Kamdevpur village of Subidpur Union, followed by burial at the family graveyard. Authorities granted Rakibul temporary parole to allow him to attend the rites, during which he remained under police escort and wore a leg shackle. After the conclusion of the funeral proceedings, he was returned to prison under police supervision.

According to police and family sources, Rakibul has been imprisoned for nearly a month in connection with a political case. Upon the sudden passing of his father on Thursday morning, his family petitioned the authorities for temporary parole. Following the necessary procedural approvals, Rakibul was permitted to leave prison for a short period to participate in the funeral.

Eyewitnesses and law enforcement officials noted that while Rakibul’s hands were free of handcuffs, the leg shackle remained in place throughout the funeral and burial. The police emphasised that under current regulations, detainees cannot be released on parole for more than twelve hours, and leg restraints are not removed during such temporary releases.

Ariful Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Nalchiti Police Station, stated: “The prisoner was released on parole strictly according to administrative approval and remained under police supervision at all times. Following the completion of funeral rituals, he was returned to prison exactly in the same condition as he had left.”

From the political organisation’s perspective, Nalchiti Upazila Student League President Aneek Rahman Sardar remarked: “The loss of a father is profoundly painful for any child. Rakibul’s brief parole to attend his father’s funeral was undoubtedly an emotional moment. We hope for his unconditional release.”

The incident has drawn attention both for its emotional gravity and the procedural adherence to prison regulations, highlighting the delicate balance between humane treatment of detainees and security protocols.
