BNP Leader Mirza Abbas Transferred To Malaysia

In a significant update regarding the health of one of Bangladesh’s most prominent political figures, Mirza Abbas, a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee and a key Political Adviser to the Prime Minister, has been moved from Singapore to Malaysia. This transfer marks a new phase in his medical journey, shifting focus from emergency clinical intervention to intensive rehabilitative care and specialist physiotherapy.

The veteran statesman, who has been battling significant health complications for over a month, was relocated on Tuesday, 14 April. His private secretary, Mizanur Rahman Sohel, confirmed the transition to the press on Wednesday afternoon, providing much-needed clarity on the leader’s current condition and the road to recovery.

Journey from Crisis to Stabilisation

The health scare began on 11 March, when the Member of Parliament for the Dhaka-8 constituency suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness during Iftar. He was immediately rushed to Evercare Hospital in the capital. However, as his physiological markers failed to stabilise, medical consultants advised an urgent transfer abroad.

On 15 March, Mr Abbas was flown to Singapore via a dedicated air ambulance and admitted to the renowned Singapore General Hospital. Following nearly a month of rigorous medical observation and advanced treatment, his condition was declared “out of danger.” While the acute phase of his illness has passed, the physical toll of the ordeal has necessitated a move to a premier rehabilitation facility in Malaysia, known for its world-class physiotherapy and neurological recovery programmes.

Chronological Summary of Medical Events

Date Location / Facility Status & Action Taken
11 March 2026 Evercare Hospital, Dhaka Admitted after collapsing during Iftar.
15 March 2026 Singapore General Hospital Emergency transfer via Air Ambulance.
14 April 2026 Specialist Rehab Centre, Malaysia Transferred for intensive physiotherapy.

Current Medical Status and Prognosis

Quoting the panel of international doctors overseeing his care, his secretary noted that Mirza Abbas is “considerably healthier” than he was during the initial weeks of his hospitalisation. However, regaining full physical mobility and strength remains the primary challenge.

“He has shown satisfactory progress, but to return to his full physical capacity and resume his public duties, he requires a period of concentrated and supervised physiotherapy,” Mr Sohel stated.

The decision to choose Malaysia for this stage of treatment was based on the availability of specific rehabilitative technology and the calm environment conducive to long-term recovery. His family has expressed their profound gratitude for the support received thus far and has requested the nation to keep the veteran leader in their prayers for a swift and total recovery.

A Distinguished Political Career

Mirza Abbas remains a towering figure in the Bangladeshi political landscape. His influence was further solidified during the 13th National Parliamentary Elections, where he secured a resounding victory in the crucial Dhaka-8 constituency. In a high-stakes electoral battle, he defeated Nasiruddin Patwari, the candidate from the National Citizen’s Party (NCP), by a substantial margin.

Beyond his role as an MP, his expertise is currently utilised at the highest levels of government, where he serves as a pivotal Political Adviser to the Prime Minister. His absence from the political arena over the last month has been notable, and colleagues across the political spectrum have sent messages of goodwill.

As he begins his rehabilitation in Malaysia, the political community in Dhaka remains hopeful that his return to the frontlines of governance is on the horizon. For now, the focus remains strictly on his health, with no definitive date set for his return to Bangladesh.
