Targeting Unauthorized Brick Kilns, Narayanganj Action

In a decisive action to curb illegal industrial activity, the Department of Environment (DoE) has demolished three unauthorised brick kilns in Fatulla, Narayanganj, following the collection of fines totalling 1.5 million Bangladeshi Taka. The operation, which began early on Sunday morning and continued into the afternoon, targeted kilns located in Nandalalpur and Shailkura areas of the upazila.

The enforcement drive was led by Executive Magistrate and Senior Assistant Secretary Foyzunnesa Akter of the DoE’s Monitoring and Enforcement Wing. She was supported by local police, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), the Fire Service, and the electricity distribution authority (DPDC).

According to AHM Rashed, Deputy Director of the Narayanganj District office of the Department of Environment, fines were imposed as follows: 500,000 Taka on Abdullah Bricks Suppliers-2 in Nandalalpur, 500,000 Taka on M/S MSB Bricks in Shailkura, and 500,000 Taka on M/S SUA Bricks in Dapa Shailkura.

Following the imposition of fines, each kiln had its electricity connection severed. The kilns’ chimneys and bricks were subsequently demolished using excavators. Additionally, the Fire Service rendered the raw bricks unusable by soaking them in water, ensuring that the sites could not continue operations illegally.

Officials stressed that this operation is part of an ongoing initiative to enforce environmental regulations and prevent unauthorised industrial activity in the district. The DoE has indicated that similar actions will continue to safeguard both public health and the environment. Local residents welcomed the intervention, noting that the illegal kilns had long caused air pollution and posed health risks.
