Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has vehemently condemned what he described as planned attacks by BNP activists on Jamaat party members on Tuesday, 20 January. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday (21 January) at Ibn Sina Hospital in Kallyanpur, Dhaka, where he visited injured party workers, Dr. Rahman accused the BNP of orchestrating violent mobs and illegally detaining members of his party.
“No individual or political party has the right to create mobs,” he asserted, adding that such acts of mob-based politics are utterly deplorable. “We hope that the era of mob-driven politics in our country comes to an end. The public is now far more aware, and the time when opinion could be manipulated through intimidation has passed,” he stated.
Dr. Rahman highlighted that the attacks were not confined to male activists; female members of Jamaat-e-Islami were also reportedly assaulted. “It is deeply reprehensible. Were these attackers not born to mothers? Do they have no sisters?” he questioned, expressing his determination never to witness such inhuman behaviour again.
Emphasising the importance of political accountability, he said: “Every party must present its commitments and programmes to the people. Citizens will make informed decisions based on both past and present actions.”
He reiterated Jamaat-e-Islami’s political stance, stressing that the party’s primary objectives include establishing justice, fairness, and a corruption-free governance system. Furthermore, he urged all candidates contesting the 300 parliamentary seats to respect the voters’ freedom of choice.
Addressing the Election Commission, Dr. Rahman called for the strict implementation of its pledges, stressing that authorities must ensure a level playing field and equal opportunities for all political parties.
