Three DESCO Workers Electrocuted in Khilgaon Accident

Dhaka, 15 March 2026 – A tragic accident in Khilgaon, Dhaka, has claimed the lives of three workers engaged in underground electrical line installation, while leaving two others critically injured. The deceased were employees of the Dhaka Electricity Supply Company (DESCO), working through an outsourced subcontractor.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Khapara area, near a local temple. According to eyewitness accounts and police reports, the workers were using a crane to lift and position electrical cables underground when, due to inadvertent contact with a live overhead line, five individuals were electrocuted.

Khilgaon Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Abdul Alim, confirmed the incident: “The workers were installing underground lines when, inadvertently, they came into contact with another active electric wire. Emergency responders rushed them to the hospital, but three of them were pronounced dead on arrival.”

Victims and Injured Personnel

The three workers who died have been identified as:

Name Age Hometown
Md. Rajib Hossain 25 Barguna Sadar, Barguna
Razzak Mia 57 Barguna Sadar, Barguna
Farid Jaman 64 Bakshiganj, Jamalpur

The identities of the two critically injured individuals have not yet been confirmed. All five were employed by a subcontracted firm outsourced by DESCO. The deceased and injured are currently under the care of Kurmitola General Hospital, where the bodies of the deceased are also kept.

According to hospital sources, the injured are receiving intensive medical attention, though their conditions remain critical. Local residents acted swiftly, pulling the victims from the site and transporting them to the hospital, potentially preventing further casualties.

Context and Safety Concerns

Electrical work in densely populated urban areas like Khilgaon carries high risks, particularly when undertaken without stringent safety protocols. This incident underscores the dangers associated with underground electrical installations, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures, proper training, and rigorous supervision for all workers.

DESCO officials have expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and stated that a full investigation into the accident is underway. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleagues and are committed to reviewing our safety practices to prevent such tragedies in the future,” a company spokesperson said.

This unfortunate event marks yet another instance of fatal workplace accidents in Bangladesh’s electrical sector, drawing attention to the broader issue of occupational safety for outsourced labourers in high-risk industries.
