Four Abandoned Grenades Recovered in Demra

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has recovered four abandoned grenades from the Sarulia area of Demra in Dhaka. According to RAB, the explosives were originally looted from a police station during the anti-discrimination student movement, raising concerns about public safety and the circulation of illicit arms.

The discovery was confirmed in a brief statement issued by RAB on Saturday. A team from RAB-10 conducted the operation following intelligence reports, and the grenades were found at a location locally known as the Goru Haat (Cattle Market) in Sarulia.

RAB-10’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Media), Tapas Karmakar, told Prothom Alo, “Based on confidential intelligence, our team carried out the operation at around 8:00 pm. We located four grenades in an abandoned state at the site.” He further explained that the explosives were fully secured and would soon be handed over to the Demra police station for further investigation.

Security experts say such recoveries are crucial to maintaining law and order in urban areas. Abandoned grenades can pose serious risks if mishandled, potentially leading to injuries or fatalities. Operations like this not only neutralise immediate threats but also serve as a deterrent against illegal possession of military-grade weapons in civilian areas.

The incident highlights the continued challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the circulation of illegal arms in Dhaka. Analysts note that weapons looted during political movements often remain hidden for years, and proactive intelligence-led operations are essential to prevent these items from being misused.
