Real Madrid’s grip on the La Liga summit has loosened dramatically after yet another disappointing draw, their third in a row. The latest setback came in Girona, where the visitors were restricted to a 1–1 result despite overwhelming dominance. This run of dropped points has allowed Barcelona to leapfrog their fierce rivals after securing a crucial win over Alavés.
Madrid entered the Girona encounter knowing that victory would immediately return them to the top of the table. Yet, for all their possession, pressure and attacking intent, the finishing touch once again deserted them. They recorded 25 attempts on goal but struggled to break down a resilient Girona side, who absorbed wave after wave of Madrid attacks.
Azzedine Ounahi’s perfectly timed finish just before the interval stunned the visitors, who had controlled the half. Real’s response came in the 67th minute, when Kylian Mbappé calmly slotted home a penalty to restore parity. But the equaliser did little to change the overall narrative—Real had the momentum but lacked precision in the final third.
This streak of draws raises questions about Madrid’s consistency and their ability to kill off matches. Despite boasting one of Europe’s strongest squads, the team have recently struggled to translate attacking superiority into decisive results. The absence of a ruthless edge in front of goal is becoming increasingly costly.
Mbappé, visibly frustrated after the match, acknowledged the disappointment in a social-media post but struck an optimistic tone. He reminded supporters that the league remains wide open and that Real must alter their rhythm and prove their worth as a united outfit.
Xabi Alonso, who has maintained a calm and composed approach, insisted that a long season presents ups and downs. While he praised the players’ overall effort, he admitted that improvements are needed, especially when playing away. His focus now shifts to restoring confidence and ensuring the team remain cohesive in their pursuit of the title.
