Three Killed in Sreemangal Crash

A tragic road accident in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar district claimed the lives of three people following a head-on collision between a microbus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka–Sylhet regional highway.

The incident occurred on Monday evening at around dusk in the Sirajnagar area, a busy stretch of the highway known for mixed traffic and frequent overtaking manoeuvres. According to local witnesses and police sources, the microbus and the auto-rickshaw collided head-on at high speed, leaving the smaller vehicle severely crushed and almost completely mangled on impact.

The auto-rickshaw driver, identified as 35-year-old Hannan Mia from North Bharauara village in Sreemangal upazila, was among those killed. Two other victims, who were also travelling in the same auto-rickshaw, have not yet been identified by authorities. Police confirmed that all three deceased were passengers of the CNG-run vehicle.

Local residents rushed to the scene immediately after the collision and managed to rescue four injured individuals from the wreckage before emergency services arrived. The injured were transported to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital for urgent medical treatment. However, doctors declared two of them dead upon arrival, while the third victim later succumbed to injuries, raising the death toll to three.

Fire service teams were reportedly on their way to the accident site when the victims had already been extracted by locals. The damaged vehicles were later removed from the highway to restore traffic flow, though congestion persisted in the surrounding areas for some time due to the severity of the crash and public gathering at the site.

Sherepur Highway Police and Sreemangal Police Station officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary observations suggest that excessive speed and a possible loss of control by one of the vehicles may have contributed to the collision. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether mechanical failure, driver negligence, or overtaking errors played a role.
