WASHINGTON, 4 March 2025 (BSS/AFP) – President Donald Trump has suspended military assistance to Ukraine, a senior US official revealed on Monday, significantly increasing pressure on Kyiv to engage in peace negotiations with Russia.
The decision follows a dramatic public confrontation at the White House between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as the US leader pushes for a swift resolution to the ongoing war.
“The President has made it clear that his priority is peace. We need our partners to demonstrate their commitment to that objective as well,” the White House official stated, speaking on condition of anonymity.
“We are pausing and reassessing our aid to ensure it contributes to a long-term solution,” the official added.
Earlier in the day, Trump acknowledged that no formal discussion had yet taken place regarding the aid suspension but refused to rule out the possibility.
He further suggested that Zelensky’s position as Ukraine’s leader could become precarious without a ceasefire agreement with Moscow, stating ominously that the Ukrainian president “won’t be around very long” if such a deal is not reached.
Context and Implications
Trump’s decision marks a significant shift in US policy, as Washington has been one of Kyiv’s key military backers since Russia’s invasion in 2022. The suspension of aid may weaken Ukraine’s defensive capabilities and place additional pressure on Zelensky’s government to make concessions in negotiations with Russia.
The move also comes amid broader geopolitical tensions, with European allies urging continued support for Ukraine while Moscow has signalled its willingness to negotiate under certain conditions. Meanwhile, US domestic politics remain deeply divided over the country’s involvement in the conflict, with some factions advocating for disengagement while others warn of the long-term consequences of reducing support for Ukraine.
