Trump Receives Assurances that Death Penalty will be Suspended in Iran

The Iranian government has announced a suspension of death sentences for anti-government protesters, following assurances reportedly received by US President Donald Trump that the killings of demonstrators have ceased. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, confirmed that Tehran has no plans to carry out executions against the protesters.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, President Trump stated, “The killing of protesters in Iran has stopped, and the implementation of death sentences has been suspended.” His remarks were widely interpreted as a signal of potential easing in regional tensions.

On the same day, the United States also announced the partial withdrawal of military personnel from a base in Qatar. Hours later, Trump told the press that he had received information about the situation from a “very important source” in Iran and would continue monitoring developments. While he did not rule out possible military action entirely, he emphasised: “We are monitoring the situation and have received a positive update.”

In a separate interview with Fox News, Foreign Minister Araghchi clarified, “There is no plan to execute protesters opposing the government.”

Analysts suggest that Trump’s statements indicate a slightly softer stance towards Iran compared with earlier warnings. Mike Hanna, a journalist reporting for Al Jazeera from Washington, observed, “The President is still considering multiple options, but his remarks suggest a departure from previous threats of military action.”

The protests, which began on 28 December 2025, initially erupted in response to inflation and severe economic hardship but have rapidly taken on a political character, spreading across large parts of the country. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, at least 2,571 people have died in the unrest, including 12 children and multiple security personnel.

Internet blackouts have severely restricted access to independent reporting, making it difficult for international observers to fully assess the situation. The Iranian government has accused the United States and Israel of fomenting unrest.

The key details of the protests are summarised in the table below:

Topic Details
Protest Start 28 December 2025
Primary Cause Inflation and economic hardship
Death Toll 2,571
Children Killed 12
Security Personnel Killed Exact number unknown, included in total
Internet Status Nationwide blackout
US Action Troop withdrawal from Qatar base
Death Sentences No plans to implement (Tehran authorities)

The suspension of executions and Trump’s statements may provide a window for de-escalation in US–Iran relations, though the long-term trajectory of the crisis remains uncertain. Observers note that while tensions in the Middle East may ease slightly, the underlying economic and political grievances in Iran continue to pose significant challenges.
