US Rescue Operation Comes Under Attack

A United States rescue operation in the skies over southern Iran came under sustained attack on Friday, intensifying an already volatile situation in the region. The mission aimed to recover one of two pilots from a downed F-15E Strike Eagle, which had reportedly been brought down earlier that day.

According to two American officials cited by CBS News, the operation encountered immediate danger. An A-10 Warthog providing aerial support was struck during the mission, forcing its pilot to eject into the sea. The pilot was subsequently rescued, though the incident highlighted the severe risks faced by support aircraft operating in hostile environments.

In addition, two helicopters involved in the operation were targeted by gunfire from the ground. One of the helicopters sustained damage, leaving several crew members injured. Despite this, it managed to land safely. Officials have indicated that the injuries were not life-threatening.

At the same time, Iranian state television reported that the country’s air defence systems had shot down an American A-10 aircraft near the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz. The report stated that the aircraft was struck and later crashed in nearby waters. However, it remains unclear whether this refers to the same aircraft involved in the rescue operation or a separate incident.

The crisis began earlier on Friday when an American F-15E fighter jet was reportedly downed over southern Iran. One of its pilots has been rescued, while the other remains missing. Both the United States and Iran are believed to be conducting search efforts, increasing the likelihood of further confrontation.

Despite the escalation, United States President Donald Trump indicated that the incident would not affect proposed discussions with Iran. In an interview with NBC News, he stated that such events were part of wartime realities and would not disrupt diplomatic engagement.

Summary of Key Developments

Event Description
Initial Incident F-15E fighter aircraft brought down over southern Iran
Pilot Status One rescued, one missing
Rescue Operation Came under aerial and ground attack
Additional Aircraft A-10 struck; pilot ejected and rescued
Helicopter Damage One helicopter hit; several crew injured
Iranian Claim A-10 shot down near Strait of Hormuz
Diplomatic Position United States maintains talks remain unaffected

The sequence of events remains partially unclear due to conflicting claims and limited independent verification. Nevertheless, the incident underscores the dangers of conducting military operations in contested airspace, where even humanitarian rescue efforts can rapidly escalate into wider conflict.
