Mamata Banerjee Praises Bangladesh, Critiques Indian Elections

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lauded the peaceful conduct of Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliamentary elections while delivering sharp criticism of India’s Election Commission, warning that democracy in the country is under threat.

Speaking at a press conference held at Nabanna on Tuesday, Mamata stated, “Before voting began in Bangladesh, there was widespread fear of potential violence. Yet the elections were conducted completely peacefully. This is a lesson we must learn. In contrast, India’s Election Commission is undermining our democracy. It has now become a ‘Tughlaq-style Commission’.”

She expressed concern over the electoral process in India, claiming that the Commission’s use of artificial intelligence to manage voter lists has resulted in the exclusion of millions of eligible voters. “Even names of qualified voters may be omitted from the final electoral roll. This is blatant manipulation intended to favour the BJP. Never before has democracy been destroyed in such a manner,” she added.

Mamata highlighted Bangladesh as a model for electoral transparency. The 13th National Parliamentary elections held on 12 February saw the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) win 209 seats, forming the government, while the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat secured 78 seats, establishing itself as the opposition.

Party / Alliance Seats Won Status

11-Party Alliance (Jamaat-led) 78 Opposition
Other Parties 14 –

The Bangladesh Election Commission confirmed that the elections were conducted smoothly with both domestic and international observers present. Despite initial fears of unrest, the voting proceeded without significant incidents.

Political analysts suggest Mamata’s remarks have reignited debate over the transparency and accountability of India’s electoral system. Experts emphasise that the Election Commission must undertake reforms to ensure accurate voter lists and transparent processes.

Mamata’s comments have stirred political controversy, prompting discussions on the integrity of India’s electoral mechanism. Analysts warn that irregularities in voter lists, the over-reliance on artificial intelligence, and the lack of transparency could undermine the very foundation of Indian democracy. By praising Bangladesh’s peaceful elections, Mamata has not only highlighted a successful democratic exercise abroad but also underscored the urgent need for reform within India.
