In the heart of Satkhira’s Kaliganj Upazila, a sprawling canopy stretches across a vast field, sheltering thousands of devotees in a scene of profound spiritual unity. Here, at the Nalta Central Ahsania Mission, the act of breaking the Ramadan fast transcends a simple meal, transforming into one of the largest communal gatherings in Bangladesh. Every evening, approximately 6,000 fasting individuals sit in disciplined rows to partake in an Iftar that is as much a feat of logistics as it is an act of devotion.
This extraordinary tradition traces its roots back to 1935, established by the revered spiritual leader and educationalist, Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah (R.). What began as a modest gathering of a few devotees within the mission’s mosque has, over nine decades, evolved into a monumental operation. Although the scale of distribution was slightly curtailed following the COVID-19 pandemic—previously reaching 10,000 people across several districts—the mission remains a cornerstone of regional philanthropy.
Preparation for this month-long marathon begins nearly 40 days before the first moon of Ramadan is sighted. According to the mission's chief accountant, Md. Ebadul Haque, the infrastructure alone is a significant undertaking; this year, over BDT 500,000 was spent solely on constructing the massive temporary weather-proof shelters.
The daily culinary operation is overseen by head chef Moktar Ali, a veteran of 45 years. His team begins work at 5:30 am, processing staggering quantities of fresh ingredients to ensure every guest receives a nutritious seven-item meal.

The success of the evening relies on a small army of 300 volunteers who meticulously lay out mats, water bottles, and plates from 3:00 pm onwards. By 4:30 pm, the "Seven Wonders" of the Nalta Iftar—comprising shingara, bananas, flattened rice (chira), chickpeas, firni, dates, and boiled eggs—are served.
Visitors travel from as far as Dhaka to witness the spectacle. "Seeing thousands of people breaking bread in absolute silence and harmony is overwhelming," remarked Chanchal Chowdhury, a visitor from Mirpur. For the staff and volunteers, the work is a "service of the heart." As Chef Moktar Ali aptly puts it, the money they receive is not a wage, but an "honourarium" for the privilege of serving the fasting public.
Nalta Central Ahsania Mission continues to stand as a testament to the enduring power of community, funded entirely by the contributions of members and devotees of the Peer Kebla, ensuring that no one in the region goes hungry during the holy month.
