4 Awami League Leaders Arrested in Satkhira

Police have arrested four leaders associated with the Awami League in Satkhira in connection with a case filed over alleged acts of sabotage.

The arrests took place on Saturday, 15 August, in the Sultanpur area of Satkhira town. Those detained are Kazi Aktar Hossain, organising secretary of the Satkhira district Awami League; Master Shafiqul Islam, a member of the Kaliganj upazila Awami League and former Youth League leader; Alamgir Hossain, general secretary of the district Tanti League; and Sheikh Mostafizur Rahman Shovon, former president of the municipal Chhatra League.

According to Satkhira Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masudur Rahman, the four men had been named as accused in a case concerning alleged sabotage. Following their arrest, they were produced before a court and subsequently sent to jail custody.

The arrests come against the backdrop of continuing legal action against political figures in cases related to alleged violence, vandalism and other forms of disruption. Such cases have resulted in arrests of a number of political activists and leaders in different parts of the country, with law-enforcement agencies maintaining that those accused must face due legal proceedings.
