Football fans in India were eagerly anticipating a rare treat this December — a visit by Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team. Messi himself had reportedly confirmed his personal trip to India, which was expected to follow the team’s friendly fixture in the country. However, growing uncertainty now clouds the tour’s fate.
According to initial schedules, the Argentina national football team was set to visit India for a friendly international match in December, marking their first appearance in the country in over a decade.
| Aspect | Details |
| Purpose of visit | Friendly match (international exhibition) |
| Planned timing | December 2025 |
| Last Argentina visit to India | 2011 |
| Messi’s role | Confirmed personal attendance on tour |
| Possible venue change | India → Africa (potentially Morocco) |
The visit was meant to be part of Argentina’s global schedule of international friendlies, which follows their current and upcoming fixtures in the United States and Africa.
Argentina are presently in the United States, where they have already played Venezuela in a FIFA friendly and are set to face Puerto Rico next Wednesday. Following these games, the Albiceleste will hardly get any rest — they are scheduled to play two more friendlies in November, the first against Angola and the second, originally, against India.
However, Argentine sports channel TyC Sports has reported that the venue for the India match could be changed, potentially relocating the fixture to another continent.
Should the India leg be cancelled or postponed, reports suggest that the match might instead take place in Africa, where Argentina could face Morocco.
If confirmed, this change would deprive Indian football enthusiasts of witnessing world champions Argentina — and especially Lionel Messi — in action on home soil after more than 14 years.
Argentina last played in India back in 2011, when a young Messi led the side in a friendly against Venezuela in Kolkata. The planned December match was set to end that long hiatus and rekindle Indian fans’ connection with one of football’s greatest teams.
