Foreigners Cannot Teach What Bangladesh’s Democracy Should Be Like: Masud Kamal

Senior journalist and political analyst Masud Kamal has said that no foreign individual can teach Bangladesh what its democracy should look like or how its political parties should govern. Such knowledge and guidance must emerge from the people and the soil of this country.

He stated that how knowledgeable a person is does not matter; what matters most is how patriotic one is. A knowledgeable person can be deceitful, but a true patriot can never be a cheat. Patriotism is the most important quality.

He further said that a person born in this country who later takes citizenship of another nation proves that they are less patriotic than a farmer of Bangladesh.

Masud Kamal also remarked that earning money or sending dollars back home from abroad is not an issue, but taking another country’s citizenship is questionable. It shows that one does not feel comfortable identifying as a Bangladeshi citizen.

Referring to National Consensus Commission Vice President Professor Ali Riaz, Masud Kamal said, “This person will teach me how to run the country? Dr. Ali Riaz will teach how to drive a rickshaw? Even a rickshaw puller knows that, as do those who ride or walk on the street.”

He emphasized that Bangladesh’s democracy and political direction must be determined by the people of this country and by the spirit of its own soil, not by foreigners.
