In a full court meeting attended by judges of both divisions of the Supreme Court, a decision was made to promote over one thousand subordinate court judges. Among them, nearly 300 additional district and sessions judges will be elevated to the position of district and sessions judges.
The meeting was held on Tuesday afternoon in the Supreme Court conference room, presided over by Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed. Judges of the Appellate and High Court Divisions were also present.
Reliable sources confirmed to the media that joint district and sessions judges will be promoted to additional district and sessions judges, senior assistant judges to joint district and sessions judges, and assistant judges to senior assistant judges. The official gazette regarding the promotions will be published soon by the Ministry of Law.
The meeting also discussed the proposal for the reinstatement of judicial powers of Begum Mosammat Kamrunnahar, former judge of the Seventh Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Dhaka. On November 13, 2021, her judicial powers were suspended by then Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain after she granted bail to an accused despite a stay order in a rape case. On November 14, the Supreme Court had instructed the Law Ministry to attach her to the ministry. Recently, the ministry submitted a proposal to reinstate her judicial powers; however, as the case is pending in the Appellate Division, the full court rejected the proposal.
Sources say that since the government’s annual calendar has not yet been published, the Supreme Court’s calendar was also not finalized in the full court meeting.
