BNP Takes Strict Measures Over Nominations

BNP is taking strict action against clashes, blockades, and protests related to party nominations for the national elections. Each constituency is being monitored from the center, and the organizational team is active. The high command has directed strict disciplinary measures against anyone disobeying party decisions. Several leaders have already been expelled for participating in protest programs over nominations.

At least 19 constituencies across the country have witnessed clashes, blockades, protests, and marches between party factions over potential candidates’ names. Leaders believe these incidents are damaging the party’s image. BNP has yet to announce candidate lists for 63 constituencies. In some constituencies, supporters of nomination aspirants have staged protests and marches. In Madaripur-1, the party has suspended Kamal Jaman Molla’s nomination, reportedly due to complaints against him.

Three central BNP leaders, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the media that objections have been raised regarding certain nominated candidates. Allegations against some candidates have led to reactions from party workers. According to party monitoring, some constituencies may see candidate changes.

In each constituency, generally 3 to 4 aspirants were competing, although some had 10 to 12. All were eligible, but party candidates were chosen after careful scrutiny. Protests and marches occurred after the announcement of the candidate list, affecting only about 3 to 4 percent. Central intervention has helped ease tensions in some areas.

Dr. Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, member of BNP’s standing committee, said reactions occurred where supporters’ preferred candidates did not receive nominations. Non-nominated candidates will be respected and evaluated in due course. Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku added that BNP is a large political party, and disciplinary measures will be taken against those acting against party rules.

Since the day of the candidate announcement, incidents of clashes and protests have occurred. On Sunday, protests took place in several constituencies. In Brahmanbaria-5 (Nabinagar), a long human chain was held demanding reconsideration of the nominated candidate. In Mymensingh-3 (Gouripur), clashes and vandalism occurred over nomination disputes. In Comilla-9 (Laksam-Manoharganj), the convoy of nomination aspirant Samira Azim was attacked. In Gaibandha’s Saghata Upazila, supporters of the nominated candidate allegedly attacked supporters of an independent aspirant.

In Comilla-10 (Nangalkot-Lalmai), protests blocked railways after Abdul Gafur Bhuiya received the BNP nomination. In Dinajpur-2 (Biral-Bochaganj), Sadik Riaz was nominated. Non-nominated supporters held silent marches and human chains. Sadik Riaz stated he was nominated for being eligible, and some disappointment among non-nominated aspirants is natural.
