Army Soldier Found Dead at Rooppur Nuclear Project Barracks

A 27-year-old soldier serving with the Bangladesh Army died by suicide inside his residential quarters at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project site in Ishwardi, Pabna, on Saturday evening. The deceased soldier has been identified as Sajib Molla, a resident of Snigdha Building within the official military barracks compound in the Pakshi Paper Mill area.

Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station, Md Ashadur Rahman, confirmed the incident, stating that the soldier had taken his own life in his private accommodation.

Sajib Molla, son of Majid Molla, hailed from Chok Diyail village under Ghior upazila in Manikganj district. Service records indicate that he had been serving in the Bangladesh Army for roughly eight to nine years and was deployed as part of the security and operational detail assigned to the Rooppur project area.

According to police accounts and eyewitness testimonies from the barracks, Sajib had returned to his third-floor living quarters following the completion of his scheduled duty shift on Saturday. Upon entering his room, he bolted the door from the inside. Sometime later, he used a combination of a traditional cotton towel and a length of rope to hang himself from the ceiling fan.

The situation came to light when colleagues noticed his prolonged absence and unresponsiveness behind the locked door. Fellow service personnel and neighbouring residents forced entry into the room to retrieve him, but he had already succumbed before any medical intervention could be administered.

Upon receiving formal notification of the tragedy, a police contingent led by Md Iyadul Rahman, In-charge of the Rooppur Police Outpost, rushed to the barracks. Officers conducted an on-site inquest and completed the mandatory preliminary inquest documentation.

The deceased soldier’s body was subsequently transferred under official escort to the Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex to complete the required medical evaluations and obtain a death certificate. Authorities have initiated standard administrative and legal procedures to determine the circumstances and personal pressures that may have prompted the soldier to take his own life.
