Trump Announces $2,000 Payment for Every Citizen from Tariff Revenue

US President Donald Trump has announced that every citizen of the United States will receive at least $2,000 from the country’s tariff revenues. However, high-income individuals will be excluded from this benefit.

On Sunday (9 November), he made the announcement via his social media platform, Truth Social. However, he noted that the plan would require approval from Congress before it could be implemented.

Trump wrote, “With the exception of high-income individuals, everyone will receive at least $2,000 in dividends.”

Although Trump did not clarify how the dividends would be distributed to American citizens, the announcement has sparked widespread discussion.

In relation to this, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin spoke to ABC, saying, “These dividends or payments could come in various forms.” He explained that they might be given through tax reductions, such as exemptions on tips or tax-free overtime benefits.

At present, the Trump administration’s tariff policies are under scrutiny in the Supreme Court, and a 40-day government shutdown has been in effect due to a deadlock, which has affected food assistance programmes.

Defending his stance, Trump said, “Opponents of tariffs are foolish. With near-zero inflation and record stock market valuations, the United States is now the wealthiest and most respected country in the world.”

He claimed that the revenue generated from tariffs has brought in trillions of dollars, and this would soon be used to begin paying off the national debt, which currently stands at $37 trillion.
