Life Imprisonment for Murder of Associate Over Gambling Loss

A man named Rehan Uddin Mizi (55) was murdered in Chandpur city’s South Gunrajdeer Khan Road area after losing a gambling game. The accused, Khorshed Alam (27), was sentenced to life imprisonment, a fine of 1 lakh taka, and an additional 6 months of imprisonment in case of non-payment of the fine.

This verdict was delivered on Tuesday (November 11) afternoon by Senior District and Sessions Judge of Chandpur, Samsunnahar.

The victim, Rehan Uddin Mizi, was a resident of South Tarabunia in Shariatpur district. He lived with his family on the third floor of Tamanna Sharmin Villa in Khan Road, Chandpur, and worked as a dredger businessman.

The convicted Khorshed Alam was from Shefali Para, Kanchanpur Union, Ramganj Upazila, Lakshmipur district, and was the son of the late Mustafa Bhuiya.

According to the case details, Rehan Uddin Mizi and Khorshed Alam became acquainted through gambling. They played gambling together several times. Over time, Khorshed lost several games to Rehan, which made him angry. On June 23, 2021, around 2:00 PM, Khorshed visited Rehan’s rented house to play gambling and, in a premeditated manner, killed him using a local weapon.

On the day of the murder, Rehan’s wife, Parveen Begum, was in Shariatpur with their child. After being unable to reach her husband by phone, Parveen asked another tenant, Mariam Begum, living in a nearby house, to check on him. When Mariam opened the door, she found Rehan lying bloodied on the bed. She screamed and informed the police, who arrived and recovered Rehan’s body.

On June 25, Rehan’s wife, Parveen Begum, filed a case with the Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station against an unidentified assailant. Using technology, the police arrested Khorshed Alam and brought him to Chandpur court on July 1.

The investigating officer, former Police Inspector Enamul Haque Chowdhury of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station, submitted the charge sheet to the court on October 10 of the same year after completing the investigation.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Kohinur Begum said during the trial, 15 witnesses testified. Based on the evidence, case documents, and Khorshed’s confession, the judge delivered the verdict in his presence. The defense lawyer for the accused was Md. Shahjahan Mia.
