Six Dead as Russian Ballistic Missiles Strike Across Ukraine

A devastating wave of night-time drone and ballistic missile strikes launched by Russian forces has left at least six people dead and dozens of others wounded across Ukraine. The overnight bombardment targeted key urban centres, piercing air defences and causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, according to senior Ukrainian officials.

In the capital city of Kyiv, residents were awakened by the thunderous roar of explosions early on Saturday morning, 11 July. Correspondents from the AFP news agency stationed in the city reported hearing two massive detonations in quick succession, with the second blast occurring just minutes after the first. Kyiv’s Mayor confirmed that the capital bore a heavy brunt of the assault, with at least twelve individuals, including two children, suffering injuries from flying shrapnel and collapsing structures.

Air Defences Overwhelmed by Multi-Vector Assault

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed the full scale of the overnight raid, revealing that Russian forces deployed a sophisticated mix of 120 attack drones and 12 advanced missiles, six of which were highly destructive ballistic variants. Whilst Ukraine’s hard-pressed air defence units managed to intercept and shoot down every single drone alongside six conventional cruise missiles, they were entirely unable to stop the six incoming ballistic missiles.

President Zelensky emphasised the sheer danger posed by these weapons. Because ballistic missiles travel at hypersonic speeds along a high-arc trajectory, they slammed into civilian targets before early-warning air raid sirens could even be activated by emergency services. In Kyiv alone, the structural impact was severe; the high-velocity weapons damaged multiple residential apartment blocks, commercial office buildings, and a local religious school.

Rising Casualties in Eastern and Southern Regions

The loss of life was most severe outside the capital, where regional infrastructure was heavily battered by the coordinated assault. In the eastern city of Sumy, local authorities reported a heartbreaking scene after guided aerial bombs struck a residential neighbourhood. The Mayor of Sumy confirmed that four people lost their lives in the attack, including a young girl, while rescue teams spent hours digging through the smoking debris for survivors.

Simultaneously, the southern port city of Odesa came under heavy fire from the maritime front. Missiles successfully breached the coastal defense perimeter, striking logistical installations and killing two citizens on the spot. Local medical facilities across the affected regions have been overwhelmed, treating dozens of civilians for severe trauma, burns, and blast-related injuries. Emergency workers remain on high alert as engineers scramble to restore power and clear the mounting rubble from urban streets.
