A passenger bus was set ablaze by miscreants in Feni on Thursday night, during the Awami League’s online-declared ‘lockdown’ programme. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in front of Shahin Academy Road, near Mohipal in Feni town. Within moments, the flames engulfed the entire vehicle, spreading panic among locals.
Two units of the fire service rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control after nearly half an hour of effort. However, the fire caused a complete shutdown of traffic on the busy Dhaka–Chattogram Highway, leading to severe congestion on both sides. Traffic movement gradually resumed after about two hours.
According to witnesses, a group of masked men suddenly appeared near the parked bus, poured a flammable liquid, and set it on fire before fleeing the scene. Nearby shopkeepers quickly closed their shutters, and some locals attempted to douse the flames with water before the fire service arrived.
The officer-in-charge (investigation) of Feni Model Police Station confirmed the incident and said that the identities of those involved are yet to be determined. “Additional police have been deployed in the area, and the situation is now under control,” he added.
He further stated that no passengers were on board at the time of the incident, but the vehicle was completely destroyed. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire might have been a deliberate act of sabotage linked to ongoing political unrest.
The arson attack has caused widespread alarm among residents. Law enforcement agencies have intensified night patrols across the city, while intelligence teams are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to trace the perpetrators.
Earlier in the day, as part of the Awami League’s ‘lockdown’ programme, police and intelligence personnel had been patrolling key points across Feni to maintain order. Despite these preventive measures, the sudden arson incident late at night has once again heightened tension in the city.
Authorities have assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure safety and prevent further disturbances.
