A protest erupted in the town of Maijdi, Noakhali, late last night, with demonstrators setting fire to tyres on the road. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the northern Sonapur area, in front of the District Council building. Members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) attempted to block the road, and multiple explosions were heard during the protest.
Footage from the scene shows 14-15 BCL leaders and activists pouring petrol on a tyre and setting it alight. The protestors, wearing masks and traditional cloths (gamcha), were seen taking part in the demonstration, during which several explosions were heard. The video was posted on Facebook by Mehedi Hasan, a member of the Jubo League, and quickly went viral on social media.
According to the police, the protesters seemed to be trying to create panic with the explosions. However, as the protestors quickly fled the scene, no arrests were made, despite the police arriving shortly after. The situation did not significantly affect traffic, as there was little movement on the highway at that time.
The Officer-in-Charge of Sudharam Police Station, Mohammad Kamrul Islam, confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, and the authorities are working to apprehend those responsible for the incident.
