Fire on the Road in Tungipara, Protests by Chhatra League and Juba League on the Dhaka–Khulna Highway

After the announcement of the death sentence of Sheikh Hasina, activists of the banned Chhatra League and Juba League held a protest rally in Tungipara of Gopalganj. On Monday (17 November) at 2:20 pm, they brought out a protest rally in front of Tungipara Sheikh Russell Children’s Park. They stayed on the road for about 20 minutes and set fire on the street. Later, fearing the arrival of the police, they fled.

The law enforcement authorities stated that the situation in Tungipara is currently normal.
Additionally, a few Chhatra League activists staged a protest on the Dhaka–Khulna highway in front of Doila Petrol Pump in Pathalia area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila. Later, they set fire to wood and straw on the highway and fled.

Earlier, in the Dumdia area of the same highway, some Chhatra League activists held a protest and set fire using straw before quickly leaving the spot.
Moreover, a few people gathered with locally made weapons in a crop field opposite the 7 March Square in Gopalganj Sadar upazila and staged a protest. They fled upon hearing that the police were approaching.

Earlier in the morning, around 7:45 am, leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League blocked the Dhaka–Khulna highway by placing tree logs at Tilshora Bazar area of Kashiani upazila and held a protest. As a result, vehicles were stuck on both sides of the highway.

Locals said that some activists of the banned Chhatra League blocked the road for about 1–2 minutes by placing tree logs kept beside the highway and staged a protest. During this time, several vehicles were stuck on both sides of the road. Later, when police from Kashiani Police Station arrived at the scene, they fled. The police then removed the logs and restored normal traffic.

Kamal Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kashiani Police Station, said that a few people came onto the road and attempted to block it. Sensing the presence of the police, they fled. However, they could not make the blockade programme successful.

In connection with the verdict of Sheikh Hasina’s trial, the law enforcement authorities have taken extensive security measures across Gopalganj. Police have been deployed at important spots of the district, and patrols on the roads and highways have been strengthened.
