Excavators Removed from Dhanmondi 32, Security Tightened with Army, Police and BGB

The excavators brought to demolish the house of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital have been removed.

However, members of the army, police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) remain deployed for the security of the house. This situation was observed today, Tuesday, around 11 am at Dhanmondi 32.

On Monday, the day of the verdict in the crimes against humanity case related to the July mass uprising, a group of demonstrators attempted to demolish the house at Dhanmondi 32. They arrived with two excavators, but the machinery was not allowed near the premises. When the army and police intervened, clashes broke out intermittently. The demonstrators eventually left the area after 10 pm.

During a visit today, police and BGB personnel were seen guarding the entrance of the road leading to Dhanmondi 32 by placing barricades. Several army vehicles were stationed in front of the house. A crowd of onlookers gathered near the barricade. A man was also seen distributing dates. According to him, he was satisfied with the death sentence of Sheikh Hasina in the crimes against humanity case, which is why he was distributing dates.

The Officer-in-Charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, Kyasheinnyu Marma, told the media that the excavators had been removed last night. Members of the police and other forces remain deployed to ensure security.

Earlier, in February, more than half of the house was demolished following a speech by Sheikh Hasina. On 5 August 2024, the house was set on fire.
